Taxonomic Structure of Planktonic Protist Communities in Saline and Hypersaline Continental Waters Revealed by Metabarcoding

چکیده

Saline and hypersaline waters are one of the most peculiar ecosystems our planet, characterized by extreme life conditions. Despite their worldwide distribution, diversity abundance protist communities in these remain poorly studied. Here, we analyze planktonic protists sampled across 38 saline water environments (2–390‰) from arid climatic zones South Urals Crimea light environmental data using high-throughput 18S rDNA amplicon sequencing. A total 9 eukaryotic supergroups, 34 phyla, 104 classes, 184 orders, 315 families 548 genera have been identified. We revealed significant differences taxonomic structure depending on salinity, geographic location pH. The demonstrated linear regression richness growth percentage unclassified Eukaryota (up to 43%) with increase salinity. Centrohelids ability inhabit a broad range salinities, up 320‰, which is four times higher than previously reported. Centrohelid species Pinjata ruminata Yogsothoth sp. assumed be specifically adapted salinity 3–210‰. obtained results provide insight into taxonomy highlight great potential for discovery new taxa due large number sequences.

Cyanobacterial endobionts within a major marine planktonic calcifier (Globigerina bulloides, Foraminifera) revealed by 16S rRNA metabarcoding

We investigated the possibility of bacterial symbiosis in Globigerina bulloides, a palaeoceanographically important, planktonic foraminifer. This marine protist is commonly used in micropalaeontological investigations of climatically sensitive subpolar and temperate water masses as well as wind-driven upwelling regions of the world’s oceans. G. bulloides is unusual because it lacks the protist ...

Melanized halophilic fungi are eukaryotic members of microbial communities in hypersaline waters of solar salterns

Until recently, it was believed that microbial communities at high salinities are dominated exclusively by Archaea and Bacteria and one eukaryotic species, the alga Dunaliella salina. Recently, it became evident that melanized fungi, so far described only in the crystallization pond of Adriatic salterns within the season of salt production, can be considered as a new group of eukaryotic halophi...

Resilience of Freshwater Communities of Small Microbial Eukaryotes Undergoing Severe Drought Events

Small and shallow aquatic ecosystems such as ponds and streams constitute a significant proportion of continental surface waters, especially in temperate zones. In comparison with bigger lakes and rivers, they harbor higher biodiversity but they also exhibit reduced buffering capacity face to environmental shifts, such that climate global change can affect them in a more drastic way. For instan...

Bioluminescence to reveal structure and interaction of coastal planktonic communities

differentiation between primary and secondary producers. A challenge thus far has been to examine these groups simultaneously with sufficient temporal and spatial resolution for observations to be relevant to the scales of change in coastal oceans. This study takes advantage of general differences in the bioluminescence flash kinetics between planktonic dinoflagellates and zooplankton to measur...

Distribution of picophytoplankton communities from brackish to hypersaline waters in a South Australian coastal lagoon

BACKGROUND Picophytoplankton (i.e. cyanobacteria and pico-eukaryotes) are abundant and ecologically critical components of the autotrophic communities in the pelagic realm. These micro-organisms colonized a variety of extreme environments including high salinity waters. However, the distribution of these organisms along strong salinity gradient has barely been investigated. The abundance and co...
